Spring Garden

Today I plant my Spring garden. I planted it on the square foot gardening style. I placed 16 radishes per square foot. Four lettuce per square. Two kale per square. I also added some compost to last years Mel’s mix of peat moss, compost, and perlite. Enjoy and subscribe.

Function Stacking.

Permaculture is for everyone.

In Permaculture Design there is a term called stacking functions.  We stack functions by designing elements to serve many functions.  This can be in either space or time.

Sprouts… Winter’s Crop.

Winter is rolling in. Nights are getting longer. Cold. Still have garden fever. Want fresh vegetables?  Try sprouting your vegetables. It’s easy, can be done indoors, and are very nutrient dense.

Why sprout. Sprouts can be grown anytime of the year, and requires little equipment. Mostly what we as homesteaders already have. Sprouting is also easy and fun. Fresh nutrient dense foods year round.

What is required. Quart mason jars, cheese cloth, rubber bands, and seeds. That’s it. Make sure all jars are clean and cleansed after each use. Molds and bacteria can build up in the jars if they are not properly cleansed. Which can make you sick. Use only growing seeds for sprouting. I use High Mowing Seeds for my seeds. They have a selection just for sprouting. These seeds have been tested to make sure no bacteria or mold are on the seeds. What I plan to try is the broccoli and salad mix. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention did a recent study on nutrient density of 47 vegetables and fruits to determine which ones were the top sources of 17 vitamins and minerals. Below is a table of the ranking.

It was not possible to include phytochemical data in the scores so total health benefits are not inclusive in the ranking scores. It is well known that different colors of vegetables contain different phytonutrients so a variety of colors is important in the diet.

Leafy greens were in the top half with other veggies in the next grouping. For the fruits that qualified as a “powerhouse” source of nutrition, they were in general at the bottom of the ranking.

Like Mom said, “Eat your vegetables.”
